Obama takes oath as US president today

Obama takes oath as US president today WASHIGTON: Again, another Super Tuesday has come. Today, Americans will seal the paradigm shift in its over 200-year-old democracy with the inauguration of Barack Obama as the country's first African-American President.

Obama of the Democratic Party had on Super Tuesday, November 4, 2008 clinched the presidential ticket to end the Republican Party's further occupation of the White House, where the outgoing President George W. Bush, held sway for eight years.

Obama's swearing in at the Capitol, seat of the U.S. Congress will begin at 11.30 a.m. America's Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Activities heralding the inauguration started Sunday with celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. This was followed Monday with a community service entitled; "Renew America together - A call to service," with the President-elect and his deputy, Joe Biden and their family members leading the train.

In the programme released by the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), Obama was quoted as saying that both himself and Biden are committed to holding "the most open and accessible inauguration in history" and thus the schedule of official public events "will allow more Americans than ever to come together in the spirit of unity and shared purpose."
