WASHINGTON: The U.S. Treasury said on Friday it would freeze the assets of one of Osama bin Laden's sons and three other members of al Qaeda it believes are operating in Iran."It is important that Iran give a public accounting of how it is meeting its international obligations to constrain al Qaeda," said Stuart Levey, undersecretary of the treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence.
Any assets the men have under U.S. jurisdiction will be frozen and Americans will be prohibited from doing business with them, the Treasury Department said.
"Designations have a far reaching impact, deterring would-be donors from providing financial support to terrorism and leaving al Qaeda leadership struggling to identify much-needed funding resources," Levey said.
Treasury named Sa'ad bin Laden, a son of Osama bin Laden. Iranian authorities arrested the son in early 2003 but Treasury said it was possible he was no longer in custody as of last September.
Treasury named the others as Egyptian-born Mustafa Hamid, described by the agency as a senior al Qaeda associate serving as a primary interlocutor between al Qaeda and the Iranian government; Muhammad Rab'a al-Sa Yid al-Bahtiyti of Egypt, who it says is a senior member of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and an al Qaeda operative; and Ali Saleh Husain of Yemen, who it says is a senior al Qaeda associate who had close relations with Osama bin Laden.
